Mentor Program
Connecting Students and Faculty
Agronomy Undergraduate Students
Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Option
A mentoring program that connects undergraduate students with faculty involved in plant breeding and biotechnology was launched during the fall semester of 2005. The program is designed to offer undergraduate students interested in plant breeding and biotechnology a chance to learn about and participate in plant breeding research. A brochure (PDF 315 KB) about the program can be downloaded here.
The Program
Students involved in the program will meet regularly with their mentor during each semester of class work. Mentors have promised to observe an "open-door" policy and will work with each student to find times convenient for meetings. During meetings, discussion may focus on possible job opportunities on and off campus, conferences and seminars that may be of interest, recommendations for undergraduate class work, and options for future studies.
In addition, students will be invited to participate in social and educational events planned by the mentoring program. Past events have included a tour of the Monsanto facility in Ankeny and a "get-acquainted" event with students, mentors, and Agronomy department advisors.
Mentors
Current mentors involved in the program are
Dr. Kendall Lamkey, Corn Breeding
Dr. Walter Fehr, Soybean Breeding
Dr. Michael Lee, Plant Breeding and Genetics
Dr. Thomas Lubberstedt, Plant Breeding and Genetics
Students are encouraged to participate in more than one mentoring experience during their tenure at Iowa State University.
